EXT Construction Offers Free Roofing in Boone Following Hurricane Helene

Company owner Glenn Johnston returned to Boone – his childhood hometown – shortly after the storm to find the cabin he grew up in severely damaged by a mudslide. Although the property was no longer in his family, Johnston contacted the new owner and offered to replace the roof at no charge. He later learned the current resident is a teacher at Valle Crucis Elementary School, which also received donated resources from EXT Construction during its post-storm support efforts.

To broaden its impact, the company posted on Facebook, inviting local residents in need of roof repairs to reach out if they lacked insurance coverage. The outreach was part of a larger initiative aimed at providing direct aid to storm-affected communities throughout the region.

Founded and led by Glenn Johnston, EXT Construction is a family-operated commercial contractor based in Raleigh, specializing in roofing, siding, metal fabrication, and flooring. Johnston manages the business alongside his mother, Margaret Rose, who serves as the company’s chief financial officer. The two have worked together for over 14 years, building the company while maintaining deep personal and professional ties to the Boone area.

Margaret Rose is the daughter of Wade Brown, a former mayor of Boone and a longtime attorney who served the community for over six decades. Brown played a pivotal role in founding local institutions, including the Boone Golf Course, the Horn in the West outdoor drama, and the local Lions Club. Rose herself is a graduate of Appalachian High School and former owner of Baity’s, a well-known gift shop in downtown Boone. She also served as president of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, where she worked to strengthen the local business landscape.

Today, EXT Construction continues its work in the High Country with an ongoing project at Appalachian State University, where it is providing roofing, siding, and gutter installation on five new faculty housing buildings. The project reflects the company’s dual focus on commercial expertise and regional development.

Although headquartered in Raleigh, EXT Construction maintains strong connections to western North Carolina and remains actively engaged in community-focused projects across the region.
