The Americans: Silver Gelatin Photographs by Marsha Burns

Marsha Burns transitioned from painting to photography in 1972, eventually developing intimate figure studies in her Seattle studio that treated subjects as formal elements alongside light and reflective surfaces. A pivotal 1984 trip to Berlin redirected her work toward exploring personal identity through appearance, a theme she carried through New York, Rome, Frankfurt, and rural Washington State. Her authentic, unstaged silver gelatin prints are now part of major museum collections worldwide, including MoMA, the Met, and the Smithsonian.
