Excerpt from the Curatorial Essay
" In the early 1990s, Susan Parrish and Gerry Lynch found each other as studio artists at Artspace, forging both their artistic identities and a friendship that has lasted more than three decades. Those early years provided them with what Artspace has offered so many artists: a place to experiment, to learn from peers, and to discover the power of community. Today, the two artists continue to create and exhibit across the Triangle, their work now deeply engaged with the fractured world around us. The Wasteland, their joint exhibition, grapples with the historical and current pressing realities of war, environmental collapse, and humanity’s capacity for both destruction and resilience. Where Gerry’s abstract expressionist canvases wrestle with gesture, chaos, and survival, Susan’s fiber-based works and sculptures transform raw materials into layered meditations on fragility, recovery, and interconnectedness. Together, their practices ask what art can reveal in an era marked by political unrest, ecological disaster, and a deep questioning of humanity’s future."
