Solar Festival: The Sky is the Limits

Join us at the Solar Festival on Saturday, July 12, 2025, from 1:00–4:00 PM at Lyons Farm Elementary School at 906 Scott King Rd in Durham, NC! Hosted by Principal James Hopkins, Dr. Wafa Khalil and the NC Climate Justice Collective, this free event promises to be an afternoon of learning, creativity, and community spirit. Lyons Farm Elementary School demonstrates how rooftop solar with battery storage can help build a more resilient, sustainable future and promote youth leadership in driving change. Participants of all ages will have an opportunity to explore solar energy through hands-on exhibits, student competitions, and the interactive climate justice performance The Good Fire.

Students in grades 4–12 can compete in exciting challenges such as the mini solar car race, solar oven bake-off, and model solar community showcase. Local solar companies and the Museum of Life and Science will offer science-based activities and a chance to win a free raffle. Come celebrate the sun’s power to cool the planet with clean, renewable energy. Learn what energy democracy looks like!
