A Classical Pairing
Paintings by Bert Beirne and Sculpture by Campbell Paxton
This classical pairing of artists Bert Beirne and Campbell Paxton represents more than just a duet between paintings on a wall and objects on a table. It is a celebration of domestic scale; a tasteful combination that bespeaks an atmosphere of intimacy. The viewer takes in Beirne’s still life that still lives, suggesting past pleasures or future enjoyment. Objects like books, ceramics, fruit, and even corks pose displaying their “thingness” hinting at a history. In a similar manner Paxton’s sculptures are touchstones to an imagined past, imagined histories. They perhaps speak of grander things but in a whisper, or at most a conversational tone. Some are fragments asking the viewer to restore or expand the piece with their own imagination, to fondle possibilities, but enjoy what is given, sometimes the part is greater than the whole. Hopefully, a sense of process and immediacy remains telling of human touch, of human longing for idea to be made solid. Each artist exercises their skill in calling forth spirits of time and place. The works dazzle with their wondrous features and invite you to contemplate and possess them.
